Cloudcroft, NM History

Over 100 years ago, railroad organizers and pioneers of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad were looking for the best location to build a connecting railroad line that also offered a plentiful supply source for timber and railroad ties needed to build the tracks.

Cloudcroft, NM

What they found was much more than favorable, it was a "clearing in the clouds," a haven for railroad developers, workers and tourists. Cloudcroft was born!

The beauty of the wilderness and the abundance of trees for logging made it the perfect location for the railway. Plus, its ground elevation of 9,000 feet above sea level made it the perfect summer home-away-from-home for many families looking to escape the heat of the lower elevations.

Cloudcroft quickly became a popular vacation spot with some of the visitors relocating permanently. Although it's been over 50 years since the last train rolled through the village of Cloudcroft, the same spirit of the old railroad still remains.

It doesn't matter whether you prefer summer pastimes or winter wonderland activities, Cloudcroft can satisfy any need. Summers are full of horseback riding, fishing, golf, camping, hiking, biking, hunting, and shopping. Winter offers just as much enjoyment through cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating, snow skiing and shopping.
